Anyway I wrote the following and attached your message from above to it. I though you might want to know how your message impacted and helped me get my point across….again thanks.

I chose not to forward this email though I did include my opinion to those I knew that were included when you sent it. I did not send it and here is why….But first let me say that I work in the ghetto’s of NJ and PA and know that is not a place I would want to live and even more so I know the opportunities afforded to most , if not all people that do live there are very few. I also make it habit to visit the most depressed areas in every area I travel to as that is where the way we treat people in this world are most obvious. I need that dose of reality at every turn to be all I was meant to be. In all of these areas there are no jobs but there is a true and real fear of leaving to where jobs might be since the streets are dangerous. The easiest and quickest income lives in the illegal trade of drugs and prostitution with clientele that would never live there but have no problem stopping by for a bag of drugs or a sexual enconuter. Those that want to work elsewhere have to get to the jobs which means they get to walk the mean streets to take bus after bus to maybe make minimum wage so the cycle of proverty continues. You can’t earn enough to leave when your there and yet to remain there means you are influenced by all that is. It is a fact that all of us everywhere live what we know and sadly are such that those that live there live what they know. NO one would choose to be poor and afraid if the choices were afforded to them before they did not feel anything but despair most days…that and fear. Those that live there also learn very young that the only way to be on the top of the food chain there is to earn the most and have the most street smarts which means it makes more sense to work the streets then be devoured by the streets. This will never change until more not less equality is represented by those in power of this country. Look at the list of past and present presidents and find the diversity …there is none which is yet another reason we need some to see change. I do realize that the email sent was mostly about a white holiday but it did mention other things which is why I responded. About the holidays since I could not say it bettter then someone named Casey lee I will just include what she wrote just to give yet another perspective. If only this could really happen. To bad those people have their heads so far up their you know what, that they can’t take it out and see this for themseleves. Instead they need to be slapped around a couple of times (not literally of course….>_>)

What’s really sad and sometimes has me ashamed of being American is that through out our entire school life we are taught THE SAME thing in History classes…we learn of those who first stepped onto this land and those who fought for it, whether it were good or bad, and you know what! THEY CAME FROM ALL OVER THE FRIGGIN GLOBE! Why on God’s green Earth do these people not see that?

I’d like to add my own two cents regarding the whole issue:

The “Proud to be White” defense speech linked in your post which Michael Richards used in court was written to get his ass out of trouble. It was not written out of pride, but of guilt for his mistake. Anyone who celebrates that speech as being anything else, with no regard to the true motivation behind it’s conception, is ignorant.

There are no ethnically-based national holidays in the US. Check the list of officially recognized american holidays at http://www.usa.gov/citizens/holidays.shtml and you will not find a single one.

Martin Luther King Day is often cited as being a “black” holiday; but this is pure ignorance. The holiday is in celebration and rememberance of one of the most well-known advocates of equal civil rights for all people through nonviolent means. It has nothing to do with MLK’s ethnicity. Anyone who does argue in this context that there are no “white” holidays, need look no further than Columbus Day; a holiday which commemorates October 12, 1492, when Italian navigator Christopher Columbus landed in the New World.

American holidays are about american people and events, without regard to race or ethnicity. The demand for racially and ethnically exclusive “white” holidays is racist.

The whole thing about BET is a poor example. A large portion of the african-american community criticizes and protests BET’s exploitation of african-american stereotypes. It is also worth noting that BET is currently owned and operated by Viacom, which is led by Philippe Dauman, a white person.

As you said, “White” is not a heritage and “Caucasian” is not found on any map. There will never be a white-american or caucasian-american. But there are italian-americans, irish-americans, german-americans, etc. Even the broader term european-american would be acceptable to many in this context. Perhaps those who advocate for “White” heritage should stop being ignorant of their own true heritage; research their roots and where they came from, as others have. Then they will have something to be proud of.
