I was talking to a friend, Alex, tonight. He received some ridiculous bulletin on myspace about the establishment of a White History Day. What the? Ironically enough, this myspace page that apparently exists to create racial equality is covered in comments containing racial slurs. Ignorant much? After a bit of discussion with Alex, and reading his bulletin of ranting in response, I decided that I was irritated enough by this ignorance to bitch about it myself. This was further fueled by the poster (who shall remain nameless) of the bulletin in question who is even now continuing to vehemently defended his “white heritage” over two hours after the bulletin was posted.
For those of you too disgusted (or lazy) to read the bulletin, I’ll give you the gist. Basically, there are many American holidays that are celebrated by ethnic minorities - but none *gasp* that are allocated to “white ethnicity”. The poster of this bulletin argues that it is mortally unfair that “whites” are restricted from celebrating their heritage in the same manner as holidays such as Black History Month.
Generally, holidays serve a purpose. Holidays celebrating ethnic diversity (and all historical holidays for that matter) have been created throughout history to mark milestones. Some are linked to a specific date and a specific incident, while others (like Black History Month) are established for remembrance, education and awareness. Each country has their own holidays that are specific to the cultural development of that country, targeting cultures and heritages that have helped shape their society.
“White” is not a heritage. Half of our globe is made up of people of white skin. There’s as much ethnic diversity between Caucasians as there is between people of an entire spectrum of colours. “Caucasian” is made up of a series of subsets that hold their own heritages. Two thrown out by the poster of the bulletin were German and Swedish (his heritage that is so poorly and unfairly represented in America). Both of these countries have their own holidays in their respective countries that celebrate their cultural heritage. If one day I decided to pack up and relocate to America, should I begin complaining about the obviously racist intentions of not including a day dedicated to Australian’s in the American calender? Of course not. Australian’s have played no important role in the historical development of American society. I may as well move to a country that doesn’t speak English and start demanding they all learn it to accommodate me.
Ethnic holidays are based on nationalities. Asian holidays are for people of Asian-American heritage. Hispanic holidays are for people of Hispanic-American heritage (Mexican, Cuban, etc.). “Black” holidays refer to those celebrated by people of African-American heritage. Africa and Asia are continents. Mexico, Cuba and other Latin areas are countries. I may not have been a whizz in geography, but where exactly is “Caucasian” on the map? Skin colour and heritage are two completely different concepts. What exactly would a “white holiday” celebrate? Everyone sits around at a barbeque, shooting off fireworks and discussing the colour of their skin?
I could rant about this all day, but it’s past midnight now so I will leave it at that. A little food for thought.

Great post! That Myspace page is disgusting.
I’d like to add my own two cents regarding the whole issue:
The “Proud to be White” defense speech linked in your post which Michael Richards used in court was written to get his ass out of trouble. It was not written out of pride, but of guilt for his mistake. Anyone who celebrates that speech as being anything else, with no regard to the true motivation behind it’s conception, is ignorant.
There are no ethnically-based national holidays in the US. Check the list of officially recognized american holidays at http://www.usa.gov/citizens/holidays.shtml and you will not find a single one.
Martin Luther King Day is often cited as being a “black” holiday; but this is pure ignorance. The holiday is in celebration and rememberance of one of the most well-known advocates of equal civil rights for all people through nonviolent means. It has nothing to do with MLK’s ethnicity. Anyone who does argue in this context that there are no “white” holidays, need look no further than Columbus Day; a holiday which commemorates October 12, 1492, when Italian navigator Christopher Columbus landed in the New World.
American holidays are about american people and events, without regard to race or ethnicity. The demand for racially and ethnically exclusive “white” holidays is racist.
The whole thing about BET is a poor example. A large portion of the african-american community criticizes and protests BET’s exploitation of african-american stereotypes. It is also worth noting that BET is currently owned and operated by Viacom, which is led by Philippe Dauman, a white person.
As you said, “White” is not a heritage and “Caucasian” is not found on any map. There will never be a white-american or caucasian-american. But there are italian-americans, irish-americans, german-americans, etc. Even the broader term european-american would be acceptable to many in this context. Perhaps those who advocate for “White” heritage should stop being ignorant of their own true heritage; research their roots and where they came from, as others have. Then they will have something to be proud of.

“Perhaps those who advocate for “White” heritage should stop being ignorant of their own true heritage; research their roots and where they came from, as others have.”
If only this could really happen. To bad those people have their heads so far up their you know what, that they can’t take it out and see this for themseleves. Instead they need to be slapped around a couple of times (not literally of course….>_>)
“This is not racist and i am sorry if you feel that way!”
Oh no, not racist at all, I guess they like to turn a blind eye to the many “non” racist comments on their site! Freaking fools.
What’s really sad and sometimes has me ashamed of being American is that through out our entire school life we are taught THE SAME thing in History classes…we learn of those who first stepped onto this land and those who fought for it, whether it were good or bad, and you know what! THEY CAME FROM ALL OVER THE FRIGGIN GLOBE! Why on God’s green Earth do these people not see that?
Ugh, I can’t go on. Thanks for the post Casey, a very fine read. Sorry if my comment was a little immature, I just get so angry at things like this and I hope Tom deletes that page ONCE AGAIN! >=(

Your thoughts on this whole ‘White History Day’ mirrors my thoughts exactly, yet you have been able to articulate it in a way in which I’ve not been able to get across to people who argue in favor of this ridiculous idea. Kudos, great post!

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU …Someone sent me an email about how the world should have white holidays along with many other white only events..such as marches (isn’t that what the KKK says too) because it was not fair. that the minority group have holidays. It also stated that those that live in the ghettos are out to often hurt and or rob the white folk and then they blame the white folks for not getting ahead..I was shocked to get this email fromsomeone I thought knew me to some degree. Obviously not since if anyone knows me for even minutes they know I am one of those no one is better then anyone else types. From the core to my being I hate even implied prejusdiceness of any type…race, weight, age, gender, physical differences, etc
Anyway I wrote the following and attached your message from above to it. I though you might want to know how your message impacted and helped me get my point across….again thanks.
I chose not to forward this email though I did include my opinion to those I knew that were included when you sent it. I did not send it and here is why….But first let me say that I work in the ghetto’s of NJ and PA and know that is not a place I would want to live and even more so I know the opportunities afforded to most , if not all people that do live there are very few. I also make it habit to visit the most depressed areas in every area I travel to as that is where the way we treat people in this world are most obvious. I need that dose of reality at every turn to be all I was meant to be. In all of these areas there are no jobs but there is a true and real fear of leaving to where jobs might be since the streets are dangerous. The easiest and quickest income lives in the illegal trade of drugs and prostitution with clientele that would never live there but have no problem stopping by for a bag of drugs or a sexual enconuter. Those that want to work elsewhere have to get to the jobs which means they get to walk the mean streets to take bus after bus to maybe make minimum wage so the cycle of proverty continues. You can’t earn enough to leave when your there and yet to remain there means you are influenced by all that is. It is a fact that all of us everywhere live what we know and sadly are such that those that live there live what they know. NO one would choose to be poor and afraid if the choices were afforded to them before they did not feel anything but despair most days…that and fear. Those that live there also learn very young that the only way to be on the top of the food chain there is to earn the most and have the most street smarts which means it makes more sense to work the streets then be devoured by the streets. This will never change until more not less equality is represented by those in power of this country. Look at the list of past and present presidents and find the diversity …there is none which is yet another reason we need some to see change. I do realize that the email sent was mostly about a white holiday but it did mention other things which is why I responded. About the holidays since I could not say it bettter then someone named Casey lee I will just include what she wrote just to give yet another perspective. One can never have to many ~ take care ~Tasha
